"Your Xbox Live community has grown to 23m strong. And as we look down the road, we'll continue to evolve the service with features and experiences that harness the full power of Xbox 360. To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the Xbox LIVE service that are incompatible with our original Xbox games, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox Live community". This is how Xbox Live General Manager Marc Whitten explains the end of the Xbox Live support for Xbox games confirmed recently by Microsoft. This decision affects both games played on the original machine (released in 2001) but also Xbox 360 compatible Xbox titles, and (more suprising) games downloaded throughout the Xbox Originals service.
Halo 2 fans will undoubtly feel sad and a bit angry about this decision, as Bungie's shooter is still the most (and by far) popular game on the original console. Xbox Live was released in November 15th 2002...but Marc Whitten gives players some good news : "the best is yet to come for Xbox Live".
