A new technology : i-MLSE

Sony and Panasonic annouced today the development of a new technology called i-MLSE (Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation), which improves optical quality while reading or writing discs. Multiple sources report that Sony, a member of the Blu-ray Disc Association, plans to introduce the i-MLSE technology to the organization for adoption.

Up to 67GB for double layer discs ?

Another improvement brought by the i-MLSE technology regards the storage capacity. Currently limited to 25GB per layer, i-MLSE would offer 33.4GB of data, resulting in a total storage capacity of 66.8GB storage for double layer discs. The method could be used on current Blu-Ray players even if the older ones could not be fully compatible. The upcoming 3D Blu-Ray technology could take benefits of this new technology, even if, let's remind it, it has not been approuved yet.
