Sony says goodbye to the Cell ?

Concerning the Playstation 4, and according to Japanese sources (especially Watch Impress), Sony was initially looking towards Intel's Larrabee but would now be focusing on developing an Intel multi-core central unit for the upcoming Playstation 4. Sony would then already be ready to develop new alternatives to the Playstation 3 Cell processor, which is described as very hard to handle by a lot of game developers. IBM will give up the Cell after PowerXCell 8i and will leave Sony in a delicate position, forced to develop the Cell by himself, or choose a new way.

Nintendo and Microsoft are also looking at new console CPU technology, and Watch Impress claims that it takes 24 months to produce new consoles, and speculates that new hardware consoles should then arrive at late 2012. But the magazine adds that new handheld consoles should arrive before Playstation 4 and Microsoft's new console.
