A new codec

The 3D Blu-Ray uses a new codec, an extension to the H.264 AVC codec, named Multiview Video Coding. The specifications also incorporate enhanced graphic features for 3D content, and could enable 3D graphic menus or 3D subtitles.
An important point concerning 3D Blu-Ray is the compatibility with Blu-Ray disc players currently in homes. 3D Blu-Ray will deliver full HD 1080p resolution to each eye, and will deliver the 3D image to any compatible display (LCD, Plasma...) regardless of what 3D technology the display uses to deliver the image. The specificities enable 2D playback of 3D Blu-Ray disc on the current Blu-Ray players.

Playstation 3 compatible with 3D Blu-Ray

The BDA also announced that the Playstation 3 will be 3D Blu-Ray compatible. A new firmware upgrade should be available next year, allowing the Playstation 3 to deliver 3D display. The 3D Blu-Ray technology will also be compatible with Nvidia 3D Vision, but also PowerDVD, WinDVD and Total Media Theater.
“Throughout this year, movie goers have shown an overwhelming preference for 3-D when presented with the option to see a theatrical release in either 3-D or 2-D,” said Victor Matsuda, chairman, BDA Global Promotions Committee. “We believe this demand for 3-D content will carry over into the home now that we have, in Blu-ray Disc, a medium that can deliver a quality Full HD 3-D experience to the living room.”
