The first Micro 4:3 Panasonic cameras like the G1 or the GH1 are great, yet, not as convincing as the small GF1 which compact size speaks for itself and allows the Micro 4:3 standard to really improve everyday's life of amateur photographers who care a lot for image quality. We previewed the GF1 in Germany at the IFA show as it was unveiled there and do fully agree with the DIWA judgement on this tiny powerful camera and its optically nicely made pancake 20mm F1.7 fast prime lens.

Here is the DIWA association press release regarding the award of the Panasonic Lumix GF1

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 receives a DIWA Gold Award
DIWA (Digital Imaging Websites Association), a world-wide organization of collaborating websites, honors the Panasonic DMC-GF1 with a DIWA Gold Award. DIWA Awards are based on test results carried out in the DIWA Labs, and evaluations on more than 200 different criteria carried out by DIWA members. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 features a stylish design and a high-quality finishing touch. The camera is based on the Micro Four Thirds System standard, as a result of which the dimensions of the GF1 are kept strikingly small. The extremely compact Micro Four Thirds lenses fit the Panasonic DMC-GF1 perfectly. Its 12.1 Megapixels of resolution and the optimized ISO sensitivities make the GF1 a proper alternative to a DSLR.

The Panasonic DMC-GF1 is a versatile camera; it can record both still shots and motion pictures in high quality AVCHD Lite. The GF1 stands out thanks to its fast and intelligent auto-focus detection system, which guarantees optimal focus. The Panasonic GF1 provides a variety of auto functions to ensure the best picture in all circumstances. The powerful functionality of the Panasonic Lumix GF1 combined with superior quality, convinces to be honored with a DIWA Gold Award.

Kai Thon, test manager of DIWA Labs, concludes: "Our test results show that Panasonic has equipped the Venus Engine processor in the GF1 with exceptionally clever algorithms, delivering outstanding performance in virtually all respects. Combined with the qualities of the high speed and compact size Lumix G 20 mm f/1.7 lens, the Panasonic DMC-GF1 masters most shooting conditions with excellence".
