September 2008: Nikon innovates when offering for the first time in the world a digital SLR that records high-def video, the D90.
August 2009: Nikon inaugurates the addition of a mini video projector on a compact digital camera, the Coolpix S1000.

A video projector in a Coolpix

Though this must have been unbelievable for the novice when discovering 3-Mpix compact digital cameras in the year 2000…. Nikon had implemented a video projector on one of its digital compacts and, as we managed to use it for a moment, the accomplishment is considerable, because indeed the size of the S1000 remains very compact for a device that carries a video projector!

28-140mm optical image stabilization

Let’s talk about photos! The Nikon Coolpix S1000 is a 12-megapixels with 5x optical zoom, i.e. a 28-140mm VR. It offers both optical and electronic stabilization and the BSS function, Best Shot Selection. It can be pushed up to 6400 ISO by reducing its resolution (pixel binning: pixels are coupled together) and also brings a new system of automatic white balance derived form those that equip digital SLRs. Technically speaking, the change remains confused, but this should be for the best.

Assisted portraits

Portraits are nicely performed with the built-in technologies of the Coolpix S1000:

  • Face detection
  • Smile detection
  • Blink detection
  • Blush effect (like with Samsung for example, the camera applies a selective blur of flesh-like colors for a nicer portrait).

Lilliputian video projector

The projector is made of a LED source and of 2 aspherical lenses. It can project an image of 26 cm at 2m of diagonal and it focuses within 3 seconds via a wheel on the top of the camera. The Coolpix S1000 will be delivered with a little remote control and a mini-tripod.

Nikon Coolpix S1000: price and availability

Nikon therefore marks the start of a series of digital compacts equipped with a similar system of image projection which should arrive in several brands. The Nikon Coolpix S1000 will be sold 399 Euros, in aluminum or black.

Main features of the Nikon Coolpix S1000
