The back of the Coolpix S70 has no button at all: the camera is entirely controlled via the tactile screen.

NIKON  Coolpix S60  | Theme : Digital Photography  | Compact digital camera

The Nikon Coolpix S70 will replace the S60 after this summer. Like its predecessor, it is a digital camera controlled via its tactile screen (like the Cyber-shot DSC-T90 and DSC-T900 by Sony – the latter even sports a wonderful 3,5" tactile screen of 922 000 pixels!). On the new generation, Nikon tried to improve the ergonomics of the camera with more advanced tactile functions inspired by the iphone, though without reaching the level of user-friendliness in the controls that would be allowed by a truly identical screen. The screen measures 3,5" for a resolution that we wish was higher of 288 000 pixels, but with OLED technology.

720p video and 5x optical zoom

Apart from that, the Coolpix S70 is a 12-megapixels with 28-140mm optically stabilized lens gifted with a hi-def function of 6400 ISO by association of pixels. The S70 offers the pleasure of HD 720p video at 30 fps.

Assisted portraits

Portraits are nicely performed with the built-in technologies of the Coolpix S70:

  • Face detection
  • Smile detection
  • Blink detection
  • Blush effect (like with Samsung for example, the camera applies a selective blur of flesh-like colors for a nicer portrait).

The Nikon Coolpix S70 will be available in various two-toned colors in September 2009 for 349 Euros.

Main features of the Nikon Coolpix S70

  • 12 megapixels
  • 5x lens equivalent to 28-140mm
  • Nikon VR optical stabilization
  • Up to 6400 ISO (pixel binning)
  • HD video 720p 30 fps
  • Portrait automatic functions:
    • Face detection
    • Smile detection
    • Blink detection
    • Blush effect
  • 3,5" tactile screen - 288 000 pixels with OLED technology
  • Two-toned Duo texture
  • 349 Euros

Nikon progresses in the concept of a compact controlled by tactile screen with new ways of controlling the device which are largely inspired from (copied on?) the iphone. The modest resolution of only 288 000 pixels and the average flowing of the tactile interface of the S70 make the iphone as exceptional and unequalled as ever: 2 years after it was released, no manufacturer has managed yet to create a product that comes close to the iphone and the Coolpix S70 is no exception. This first impression provided by a pre-series copy of the Coolpix S70 will have to be confirmed with a standard model.
