Nikon D300s : built on a sain basis

The D300S heritates from an excellent base : the Nikon D300 and kept a few things we love about this camera :

  • 12 megapixels sensor which evolved on the D90 giving excellent results and evolves again here. We can expect the very best. It also offers 14-bit RAW encoding.
  • Integrated sensor cleaning system
  • Multi-cam 3500 DX AF system with a wide coverage thanks to its impressive 51 points (including 15 cross types) offering 3D dynamic subject tracking.
  • 100% coverage of the viewfinder
  • The excellent 3" 922 000 pixels TFT screen of its predecessor.

Nikon D300s speed ?

This interesting prosumer camera is faster than the D300 offering a burst rate of 7 fps (6 fps on the original D300). With the MB-D10 additionnal grip, the burst rate remains at 8 fps. The start up time is down to only 130 ms and the shutter release lag to 49ms only.

720p movies

HD movie recording appears on the prosumer segment in Nikon's range with to the D300s which makes it possible to record 720p movies with sound but this time Nikon's D-Movie brings a few important things that lack to the D90 :

  • AF (a button allows to focus when you want, it is not continuous yet).
  • Sound recording and the presence of an external microphone slot
  • You may also edit your movies directly in-camera

.

Quiet mode and ergonomics

Just like what we saw on Nikon's D5000, the D300s offers a quiet shooting mode. This allows user to shoot in-door, in museum, at a concert.... without troubling the quiet atmosphere with the sound of the mirror comming up and down. This Quiet mode is very efficient. New also on the D300s is the special OK button located at the center of the multidirectionnal pannel. D300 users know, by experience, that the previous validation system was a bit tricky. A new dedidacted liveview button also appears on the D300s as : LiveView should be used more often while recording videos.

Nikon CLS system

Still compatible with the famous CLS creative flash system from Nikon, the integrated flash of the D300s offers a coverage of 16mm. This wide area corresponds to the shortest Nikkor lens mounted on the APS-C D-SLR : the 10.5 fisheye mounted on the D300s is equivalent to 16mm.
We all know D-Lighting as well as Active D-Lighting. But we don't always use it wuth the acurate level : now, on the D300s, you may shoot multiple exposures with various Active D-Lighting levels. It is the D-lighting bracketting function. smart.

Memory card dual slot

Yes, as on professionnal camera, this prosumer camera (often used bu professinnals photographers) now brings the possibility to use SDHC cards in one slot and a CF card in the other one. You can also manage how the camera will handle these cards : double copy, RAW on one and JPEG on the other one, etc....
