Disappointing financial results for Palm
Palm has just closed its latest fiscal year and the results aren’t great. Indeed, the firm has announced losses of about 750 million dollars for sales of around 736 million dollars, down from nearly a half. Over the year, Palm has sold 2.4 million handsets, 25% less than the year before. The spectacular release of the Palm Pre and of the new operating system Palm Web OS should help Palm come back in the race.

The Palm Pre to their rescue
The Palm Pre was launched on June 6 in the US and is supposed to bring the company back in the race, as announced recently by its CEO Jon Rubinstein. Indeed, the smartphone represents the revival and the evolution of Palm’s handsets. Besides, the new home-made operating system called Palm Web OS positions the manufacturer as a potential direct competitor of the couple iPhone/Mac OS X Mobile or of the multimedia handsets operating under Android and Windows Mobile.

The Palm Pre made a good start
Since the Palm Pre was launched about 200 000 units were sold, according to some analysts, or 150 000 units according to other analysts. According to Sprint, the American operator who holds the exclusivity to sell the handset, the Pre would have met a large success since it was launched, which even became out of stock. The Pre would then be off to a good start to restore the image of Palm. Nevertheless, neither the manufacturer nor the distributor wished to communicate about the sales figures and we have nothing official for now.
