The only 2 hybrid compacts with interchangeable lenses that can record HD video, the Panasonic GH1 (1080p) and the Olympus Pen E-P1 (720p), are facing one another in a comparison of their video capacities on dpreview.

Compaison of the Olympus E-P1 and Panasonic GH1 video modes

The website dpreview is Olympus’ favorite. We’re nearly getting jealous here in France: they had the time to test an Olympus E-P1, which was unveiled a couple of days ago. When presenting the digital Pen, Olympus confirmed that it will be able to record videos in 720p at 30 fps, which is a compromise but doesn’t reach, at least on paper, the image quality of the Lumix GH1, conceived for video as well as for photo while the Olympus is first and foremost a camea. dpreview publishes sequences that were shot with both cameras: here.

Panasonic GH1 optimized for video Vs Olympus E-P1 embellished with a video mode: 2 philosophies

Dpreview therefore offers for download video sequences shot with both micro 4/3 alternatives. Be careful, the video files to be downloaded are very heavy, but at least they will allow everyone making their own opinion on the difference of quality between both hybrid cameras. However, it should be noted that most videos shot with the Panasonic GH1 were recorded with the lens dedicated to video, the Lumix G HD, a 14-140mm (so 28-280mm equivalent), stabilized by the optical mechanism O.I.S. and soundproofed, when those of the Pen E-P1 were captured with the Zuiko Digital standard lens, the 14-42mm, and when the Olympus cuts its mechanical image stabilization when it records videos in order to reduce the noice. View here the videos of both micro 4/3.

The 2nd generation Lumix G favors video, its main asset. But this costs a small fortune.
