The iPhone 3GS presented at the WWDC

Presented yesterday evening at the opening keynote of the WWDC 2009, the iPhone 3GS looks like a super iPhone 3G. With an "S" as in "Speed", the 3GS by Apple is to be way faster than its predecessor.

iPhone 3G Vs 3GS: same design

In terms of aesthetics, you nearly can’t tell apart the new iPhone 3GS and its younger brother the 3G.

From a design point of view, the 3GS is no different from the iPhone 3G

iPhone 3GS: a boosted iPhone 3G

From a technical point of view, the new iPhone 3GS is now compatible with HSDPA 7,2 Mbits/s and supports the Open GL ES. Besides, this new iPhone is said to be "2 to 3 times faster than before" and this can easily be checked with the time taken by applications to launch. The loading time of the SMS app or of the SimCity game was for example divided by 2.

3 megapixels and video for the iPhone 3GS

Largely criticized because of its camera which was deemed too basic, the iPhone 3GS had to cope and it now offers a 3-Mpix sensor with autofocus, an automatic macro mode and better light sensitivity. On top of this, a video mode is now available: shooting at 30 frames per second (VGA resolution), sharing (YouTube, MMS) and editing (trimming the beginning and the end of the video).

Voice-controlled iPhone 3GS

Like the iPod Shuffle, the iPhone 3GS can now be controlled by the voice. You can then manage the device, call a contact by saying its name, ask for a favorite playlist to be read, ask for the artist’s name etc...

The iPhone 3GS in Compass mode

It had been rumored for a while... The iPhone 3GS is therefore equipped with a compass and is compatible with the Nike+ kit. Perfect for jogging!

iPhone 3GS: Better battery life

The iPhone 3GS also differs from the 3G model as to its battery life which is better. The device can now remain 300 hours in stand-by, 5h in 3G talk, 12h in 2G, 10h when viewing videos and 30h when listening to music. Eco-friendly users will also appreciate the fact that the device is "cleaner": no mercury or arsenic.

iPhone 3GS: price and availability

Produced in 16 GB (199$) and 32 GB (299$) versions, the iPhone 3GS will be available in black or white from June 19 in France. And if you prefer the standard 3G model, it’s not too late as the price of the latter has decreased, to 99$ (8GB).

The iPhone 3GS will include the firmware 3.0, which is described for you there: iPhone OS 3.0 on June 17 !
