Nef Codec 1.7.0: what’s up ?
|
|
Here are the improvements brought by this new codec for NEF files under Windows:
- Compatibility of NEF (RAW) images taken with the D5000. Know more about Nikon D5000 here.
- The file where the software is stored was modified: it isn’t "¥Windows¥System32¥" anymore but "¥Program Files¥Nikon¥NEFCodec¥".
- This new codec solves the problem of a message telling you that the image display is corrupted if a picture, for which you have selected the "Landscape" or "Portrait" image optimization using ViewNX, is displayed in Windows Photo Gallery of a computer on which optional image optimization hasn’t been installed.
- If you try using Windows Photo Gallery to e-mail a NEF file edited in Capture NX 2, the JPEG attachment will be re-sized in 1.280 × 1.024 pixels. This problem was solved.
- Reduces the necessary time to display NEF files the brightness of which was modified in ViewNX.
With this update of the Nikon codec for Windows, Nikon users will be able to read the RAW pics of the D5000 directly in Windows gallery.

Towards a unified RAW format
|
|
Every camera manufacturer has created its own format of RAW files, those raw pictures from the sensor, with each time several reasons for being different from the other formats. Though there is no doubt that these reasons are fully justified, this multiplicity of different formats (sometimes several for the same manufacturer) is rather prejudicial to photographers and editors of image processing software. Thus, some of them are calling for a standard format for RAW files, such as the American Bibble, about to release its 5th version, as promising as it is late. On the other side, Adobe has set up a while ago a unified format of negatives: DNG.
