Swivel screen : total freedom
Even though the D5000's creen measure "only" 2,7" and offers a definition of "only" 230 000 pixels (compared with Nikon's gorgeous 921 000 pixels screen we see on the D300/D700 family and more), we loved that screen because it swivels on the 2 axis. And that is a really huge and nice feature : you can frame how you want : on the floor, above the crowd, make a self portrait, and so on. And on the Nikon D5000, the screen really is swivelling, and on both axis please ! This means that your freedom of movement has just no limit. The only counterpart is that the body is somewhat a bit thicker than an SLR with a fixed screen.

D5000 et D-Movie version I
The real high definition movie recording lovers may be a little bit disappointed by the release of the D5000 has it only embeds the original system as seen on the D90 last fall. If the 720p moving recording of the D90 was setting a new standard (the first SLR with movie recording capabilities !), the D5000 remains at the same stage, ignoring the progress of some competitors like Canon and its Digital Rebel T1i which combines 15 megapixels still image and 1080p video recording. Yet, let's say that Canon's full HD image rate is only 20 fps when Nikon's D5000 hits the 30 fps in 720p (like the Rebel T1i offers in 720p actually). But we are quite surprised to see that the D5000 comes with the same major limitation sas the D90 came with : no autofocus in movie mode and a poor mono sound... Yet, the Nikon D5000 offers an HDMI connection which can either output your images in 1920 x 1080 pixels or in 1280 x 720 pixels depending on the screen you are using.

LiveView AF modes
Although the autofocus is not working in video mode, it is quite efficient in still image photography : it offers the same 11-point AF system as the D90. In LiveView mode, it even has a subject tracking capability which will allow the camera to stay focused on the subject you have decided and can retrieve its track when it gets back into your frame after disappearing for a few seconds.

Quiet mode
Sometimes, in museums or in some ceremonies, you have to keep silent and the D5000 will help you taking pictures in a quiet way with its "quiet" mode. In this mode, the mirror brakes twice when going up which lessens the noise of the mirror hitting the bumpers. Then, the picture is taken but as long as you will keep your finger on the shutter button, the mirror will stay up, letting you the time to wrap the D5000 into a jacket or your camera bag so that the noise of the mirror going back to its initial position can't be heard.
