The new Mac Pro gets a Nehalem first

Although the updates of the iMac and the Mac Mini were scheduled, the new Mac Pro was not expected until the end of the month. Let’s detail this high-performance monster that comes straight from Cupertino.

The new Mac Pro has finally arrived

The saga has been lasting for a good while. Although last summer we thought Apple would stop selling the Mac Pro (The end of Mac Pro?), soon everyone knew that Apple’s upscale product would be renewed, as of last September. In fact, it was only rumored last month that the new Mac Pro would arrive in March, recently equipped with Nehalem processors.
 

New Mac Pro: beautiful outside, powerful inside

The Mac Pros now carry a new architecture (QuickPath Architecture) based on the new Intel Xeon. These quad-core processors comprise a memory controller for each processor, which induces performances that are noticeably improved. The other new feature – we could have done without it, though – is that the FireWire 400 is replaced by a 800 only. This is now a common feature on all Macs...
 

New Mac Pro: price and availability

Although the previous generation comprised only 2 model that one could customize at will, the new Mac Pro is now presented in 2 models, the main difference being their processors. Despite of this, numerous customization options are still available: processors at 2.93 GHz (1xQuad) or 2.66 GHz (2xQuad) or 2.93 GHz (2xQuad), memory that can be extended to 32 GB and cards to be selected between an NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 ar an ATI Radeon HD 4870/512.

Here are the specs of the 2 models of Mac Pros available as of today on the apple store

  • Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" 2,66 GHz with 8 MB of Level 3 cache - 3 GB of SDRAM DDR3 - NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics card with 512 MB of RAM GDDR3 - 640 GB hard drive 7200 RPM - SuperDrive 18X - 4 PCI Express 2.0 ports - 5 USB 2.0 ports - 4 FireWire 800 ports - 2 299 Euros
  • Mac Pro 8-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" 2,26 GHz with 8 MB of Level 3 cache - 6 GB of SDRAM DDR3 (extendable to 32 GB) - NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics card with 512 MB of GDDR3 - 640 GB hard drive 7200 RPM - SuperDrive 18X - 4 PCI Express 2.0 ports – 5 USB 2.0 ports - 4 FireWire 800 ports - 2 999 Euros
