After waiting for a long time, the Cupertino company eventually decided to update the Mac Mini. Despite an unchanged design, it’s a more powerful and better equipped Mac that Apple is offering now. Too bad that the price should be always more expensive...

The new Mac Mini keeps its original design

Just like for the new iMac, no stylistic change for the Mac Mini. The smallest Mac that was ever built keeps its original design, the one which was presented in January 2005.

Mac Mini: up-to-date technical specs

Like their design, the number of models in the catalogue remains the same. However, the processor frequency on the entry-level model moved to 2 Ghz (Vs 1.83 Ghz previously), and the latter is equipped with a 120 GB hard drive (Vs 80 GB before). The other good surprise is that Apple, at last, gets rids of its Combo player and offers SuperDrive on both models of the Mac Mini. On the upscale model, the processor remains the same but the hard drive gains 200 GB, to 320 GB.

Among the improvements that are common to both models of the range, you’ll notice the very important change to the NVIDIA 9400M chipset (which is why the FireWire 400 port is replaced by a single FireWire 800) and 5 USB ports.

Finally the new Mac Mini, like the whole Apple range, adopts a mini DisplayPort which allows connecting the LED Cinema Display. However, it doesn’t get rid of the mini-DVI video output, which means you could e.g. connect 2 screens simultaneously...

New Mac Mini: price and availability

The performances of the new Mac Mini increased, but so did its entry price! As a comparison, the entry level of today (599 Euros) has more to offer than the high level of yesterday (699 Euros) – but still, the ticket price to buy a Mac Mini has increased (599 Euros Vs 499 Euros previously).

Here are the specs of the 2 models of Mac Mini available as of today on the Apple Store

  • Core 2 Duo 2,0 GHz, 1 GB of RAM extendable to 2 or 4 GB, 120 GB hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 128 MB of SDRAM DDR3 shared with the main memory, SuperDrive, AirPort, Bluetooth, 599 Euros
  • Core 2 Duo 2,0 GHz, 2 GB of RAM extendable to 4 GB, 320 GB hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256 MB of SDRAM DDR3 shared with the main memory, SuperDrive, AirPort, Bluetooth, 799 Euros
