New iMac: unchanged design

As regards design, the new iMac’s haven’t changed at all. The Aluminum models presented during summer 2007 still appeal to users and are still relevant today after the MacBook has moved to aluminum. From an aesthetic point of view, the new iMac follows the tradition of the previous generation and keeps moving.

Technical specs of the new iMac

Although the outside doesn’t change much, the hidden side of the new iMac’s evolves a lot in every way. As for processors, the entry-level model has a frequency that moved from 2.4 to 2.66 GHz, while the hard drive gained 70 GB, to 350 GB. Similarly, the upscale model doubles its capacity to offer 1 TB, Vs 500 GB previously. Finally, 2 and 4 GB of RAM are now offers Vs 1 and 2 GB before.

From a graphical point of view, Apple installed in the new iMac the GeForce 9400M chipset by NVIDIA, already used on the MacBook. No surprise here then...

4 USB ports are still on offer, while the FireWire 400 port disappears and is replaced by a single FireWire 800 (due to the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M chipset). Other new feature: a Mini DisplayPort in order to connect the LED Cinema Display and extend one’s desktop.

New iMac’s: price and availability

Unfortunately, the rise isn’t in performances only. Indeed the 20" entry-level model, which was previously sold below the psychological price of 1000 Euros, is now sold 1099 Euros. True, at this price, the new iMac is more richly gifted than its predecessor.

Here are the specs of 4 models of iMac available as of today on the Apple Store

  • iMac 20" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz - 2 GB of RAM - 320 GB hard drive - NVIDIA GeForce 9400M - SuperDrive - 1 099 Euros
  • iMac 24" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz - 4 GB of RAM (extendable to 8 GB) - 640 GB hard drive - NVIDIA GeForce 9400M - SuperDrive - 1 399 Euros
  • iMac 24" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.93 GHz - 4 GB of RAM (extendable to 8 GB) - 640 GB hard drive at 7200 RPM - NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 256 MB memory - SuperDrive - 1 699 Euros
  • iMac 24" Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz - 4 GB of RAM (extendable to 8 GB) - 1 TB GB hard drive (7200 RPM) - NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 with 512 MB memory - SuperDrive - 2 099 Euros
