Since it was launched, the iPhone barely evolved in terms of hardware, except for a HSDPA chip. But the Cupertino firm could launch this year a new version, to blow competitors away (a bit more).

Quad-Core graphics chip for iPhone ?

According to TG Daily, Apple could use a PowerVR SGX543 graphics chip on the next version of its iPhone. This chip can bear an unlimited number of cores, and it would also allow to relieve the CPU of certain tasks via OpenCL. Besides having additional cores will increase the CPU power, thus bring the iPhone (and iPod Touch) even closer to gaming platforms – portable and even home-based (What if the iPhone became a home console?).

iPhone OS 3.0 for 2009 ?

In order to support and manage this additional power, this year the iPhone should benefit from a strong update of its operating system. It seems Apple hasn’t said the last word to competitors, and could blow everyone away when launching the iPhone OS 3.0.
