3.5" touchscreen on the DSC-G3

Sony DSC-G3 can be operated on a big and nice 3.5" screen, as you can see its back panel has very few buttons. The screen is tactile. Its resolution is huge, with 921 600 points (Xtra Fine LCD). In its built-in memory, the Sony G3 can stock 1000 photos in full resolution (10 megapixels) and 40 000 in VGA quality.

Wi-Fi and LAN connections

The American audience can upload their photos or videos on on-line albums or on video-sharing websites such as Youtube via a Wi-Fi conncetion to a hotspot – in fastfoods, hotels, airports, train stations etc. This kind of camera have always been a flop in Europe, because of the divided territory and the financial aspects linked with accessing hotspots (cf Kodak EasyShare-One). In the US, Sony’s partner will be AT&T. Too bad for us here – unless Sony Europe manages to establish partnerships with the European telcons – because it’s child’s play to upload stuff: one simple button allows to connect to your Picasa album or your Dailymotion account. The Cyber-shot G3 can also be used as a web tablet to view your pictures, and you can connect to retrieve photos that are saved on your on-line album. Well done!

10 megapixels and 4 x zoom

As regards shooting, the G3 is equipped with a 10-megapixel sensor and a 4x telescopic zoom (ouch), with Scene detection, Face detection with an Anti-blink function (the SLR takes 2 pictures and gets rid of the one where the subject has their eyes closed) – all this in a very thin envelope. The famous ‘Smile shutter’ is of course available (the camera waits for the subject to smile before shooting), and so is the contrast optimizer which lightens the shades, etc...

Sony Cyber-shot G3: price and availability

You got it now, this communicating plaything will be for US user only, and we don’t know if we’ll get a chance to find it in Europe with a subscription to access the hotspots of a telcon... but in the US it will be sold $ 500 from February.
