SDXC, the card with 2 terabytes

The manufacturers organization, in charge of promoting cards in SD, SDHC and now SDXC formats, has just defined the features that will appear in 2009: all the records will be broken. Indeed our small SDHC cards, of the size of a stamp, will have to reach the amazing capacity of 2 TB, i.e. no less than 2 000 GB! But transfer rates are not left out (mainly due to HD), as the future SDHC cards will have to reach a data transfer speed of 104 MB per second in 2009, and the aim will be of 300 MB per second in the future.

Let’s look back to just a year ago, at the 2008 PMA, when Panasonic was proudly announcing an SDHC card of 64 GB to go with its HD camcorders which capture movies on SDHC cards (such as the Panasonic SD9, a reference). In 2009, we’ll move from 64 GB to 2 000 GB!
