Pictures with the D3x: have a look!

The website Photographyblog shows its first pictures taken in a studio setting, which is what the D3x was made for – among other features. With these pictures one can easily check the qualities of the CMOS 24-megapixel sensor of the D3x.
As shown on these pictures, which were taken in Large / Fine JPEG setting with sharpness at the default level, using an AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm F/2.8G ED or an AF Nikkor F/2.8D ED lenses, the D3x fully boasts its high resolution function, little moiré pattern or aliasing and the fine details are well-displayed. However there is no target and no basis for comparison in order to confront it to e.g. Sony’s Alpha 900.

Estimating the Nikon D3x’s electronic noise

So the choice will be tough now for Nikon fans: which one to choose? A Nikon D3 with a very low resolution but an amazing sensitivity which can be pushed to 25 600 ISO? Or the new Nikon D3x, with its high resolution nearing the medium format but, consequently, with a lower sensitivity, being limited in native at 1 600 ISO? To have an idea of the Nikon D3x qualities in high resolution, Photographyblog is displaying photos of the same model at the maximum sensitivity of 1 600 ISO, then in extended settings of 3 200 and 6 400 ISO. We will all have our own opinion of the D3x achievements in high sensitivity, and see what is acceptable or not. However, given the sensor very high resolution, the D3x pictures, compared with those of a D3, will appear twice as less noisy when printed than when displayed on-screen to 100%, as the colored pixels are hidden in the resolution.

Warning : On these pictures, judging by the aspect of the background and the depth of the black of the model’s hair, one may notice that these pics were not exposed in a totally even way. This can impact e.g. the noise, especially as the highest ISO settings seem to be the less exposed pictures. One knows that dim lights tend to increase the noise.
