Sigma may be one of the very few companies in which all photographs, both professional and amateurs had high expectations. They invented the analog like digital sensor : the X3. A triple layer sensor which was intended to bring better resolution, less artifacts and more subtle nuances. But Sigma, with its SD14, SD15 or DP1, was the only brand to really believe in it and to implement this technology into their cameras. So, in spite of the high expectations of all observers, Foveon commercial career was a dramatic failure. 8 years after Sigma and Foveon started working together, Sigma could easily take over Foveon, a company which had been endangered by weak sales.

So today, Foveon is Sigma's branch and this means a lot. It sounds like a great answer to those thinking that Sigma was about to give up the SLR market to focus on their initial market : lenses. The good point for Sigma is that they will now be even nearer to develop next generations sensors and SLR.
