37 megapixels 30x45mm sensor

Leica has implemented a Kodak sensor of 37 megapixels on the S2 but it would not be so noticeable of this sensor was not so big : it is 56% larger than a usual full frame sensor. It measures 30 x 45 mm ! Therefore, it offers 6 micrometers large pixels and should range up to 1600 ISO. Thank to the new "Maestro" processor and a new line of premium lenses, the S2 (the first of the newly Leica S-System) should deliver outstanding images.

New S lenses

Yes, with such a large sensor, Leica had to redesign a new range of lenses. As of today, 9 lenses are to be launched with the S2 and next summer, when the S2 should be available, i twill come up with 5 of them. Let's precise here that they focal length raio once mounted on a S2 will be of x0,8. We'll have lenses ranging from a 24mm to 180mm with a tilt and shift 30mm and a 120mm macro.

The rear of the camera will embed a 3" 500 000 pixels LCD screen but the main use of the S2 will be through the super wide and ultra bright viewfinder : even larger and brighter than the ones we already appreciate in Full Frame DSLR like the Nikon D700 or Canon EOS 1Ds MKIII.

Prices and availability of Leica S2 SLR

We do not know at which price Leica will lanch this promising camera but today on the Leica booth at Cologne 2008 Photokina, the S2 specialist assured us that its price should be at a medium format price but they wait for the market to be stabilized, price wise, to announce its price. Medium Format prices are decreasing very fast nowadays.
