The new Nikon D90 replaces the D80. This is a totally new camera with plenty of technological bonuses like, for the first time ever on an SLR : movie recording capabilities. But the D90 has a lot more to offer than that.

Nikon D90 : 12 megapixels

First of all, the new Nikon D90 comes with a new DX size sensor of 12,3 megapixels. Its ISO settings range higher than usual with a natural sensitivity of 200 – 3200 ISO but the D90 can reach 6400 through the H1 function. The Expeed processor comes in handy for noise reduction.

LiveView and Video recording

The D90 offers LiveView capabilities with a dedicated contrast detection autofocus. In this mode users will enjoy the nice screen of 3" and 920 000 pixels as seen on the D300, D3 and D700 from Nikon. But in addition to LiveView, the D90 can record movies in high definition. This is the very first time ever a DSLR can record movies. Their resolution is 1280 x 720 pixels, 720p, with a rate of 24 fps. Nice movie lovers will enjoy the sensor size which is many times larger than what we find on usual digital camcorders. This will allow users to get nice bokeh, better images with lower noise and better colors. The eypiece of the D90 covers 96% of the actual framed image.

11 points AF

Autofocus module use on the D90 is the well-knowned Multicam 1000 from Nikon with its 11 points. On the center, these AF sensors are more sensitive. The Expeed procesor allow continuous shooting at 4,5 fps and with the En-EL3e battery, the D90 can take up to 850 photos. Nice.

Amateur features offer of the Nikon D90

The D90 also offers Nikon Picture Control (like Canon's Picture Styles) with fully editable profiles. The GPS antenna can be mounted on the external flash hot shoe for geotagging. The internal flash has a guide number of 18. Amateurs will enjoy the retouch menu of the D90 which can erase red eyes, correct lens distortion or create fisheye effect. The Nikon D90 is also able to detect faces but even to recognize up to 5 faces to track a certain person on the frame.

Prices and availability of Nikon D90

The D90 shoots hit the stores around mid-september. It will be launched together with the all new AF-S DX Nikkor VR 18-105mm lens.
