P6000 : the compact for D-SLR users

With the Coolpix P6000, Nikon is targeting the DSLR users market. Those who wish they had a second more compact camera than they SLR, but can't give away on image quality. That is why, Nikon has implemented a larger sensor than usual (1/1,7") with still a too high resolution for our taste (13,5 megapixels...).

4x zoom with ED glass

Prosumers and camera lovers are very demanding to the optical quality of their cameras. Here, on the Coolpix P6000, Nikon is using ED glass. Two lenses are built from this very low dispersion high quality glass, very well-known by Nikonians. The lens is a 4x 28-112mm.

Prosumer DNA

The P6000 is a desirable camera from many aspects like its built constructions which is really high end, and ethernet connexion to upload pictures to Nikon MyPictureTown servers from a network, the compatibility with Nikon's "Picture Control" which lets you copy and paste all the settings from your DLSR to this compact camera. Even a GPS antenna has been integrated in the P6000 nicely designed body. An external flash hot shoe will allow Nikon users to mount their SB flash on the P6000.

New RAW format of the Nikon P6000

But one of the main point of the Nikon P6000 that would a prosumer go for it is undoubtedly its RAW format mode. Yes, a compact with a RAW format is THE key to better images. Nikon knows how we now are sensitive to such things. Nikon introduces a new RAW format, not the traditional NEF here, but the NRW which may be read and processed by Nikon View NX or Capture NX2 (brilliant, but still not offered with Nikon cameras...). But, and we hate these kinds of "but" : this format will be compatible with Windows only. Apple users will not be able to deal with it. Too bad ! That might change in the future.

Main features of the Nikon Coolpix P6000
