Ricoh has launched an interesting compact digital camera with a versatile 28-200mm zoom range years ago under the name of the R1. It now comes with the R8 which has been reviewed by Phil Askey's dpreview team. This interesting review shows how great the zoom is although the optical image stabilization seem rather not so efficient as Canon's, IS, Panasonic LUMIX Mega O.I.S. or on Nikon VR. The camera is quite reactive and its macro mode is really performing good. Yet, the camera is found too noisy both while focusing and while zooming which can be an issue if you wanted to shoot discretely. The noise reduction software also tends to wash away a great part of small details. We know that Ricoh is not among best brands when it comes to high ISO. Dpreview has also found the face detection of the Caplio R8 not really helpful and not performing good.

All in all, the review of the Ricoh R8 ends with a "recommended" rating. It
is to be recommended as a nice and very efficient point and shoot camera to walk
around with but certainly not as a camera, which enable you to shoot in low
light situations nor to get huge enlargements of your prints. You can get all
details on : the in-depth review of the Ricoh Caplio R8.
