OLED: a technology with prospects

Samsung demonstrates that the OLED technology will be the top technology as far as TV is concerned. This technology has the advantage of using less energy than LCD screens, OLED screens are also thinner. However, today mass production isn't possible and the price is really higher than LCD's. Yet, we all know that it will soon come and that it will make our latest flat TV appear really old fashioned with all OLED's pros regarding thickness and image quality.

31" and 14.1" Samsung OLED TVs

During CES 2007, Sony created a strong impression presenting the 27" OLED screens. This year, it was Samsung's turn, presenting an OLED TV but this time, in 31". Another 14.1" version was also introduced. These TV sets use AM OLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) developed by Samsung SDI. Their weight are 40% lower than same size LCD screens. The contrast ratio is 1 million to 1, the color range 107% and the luminosity 550. These screens can work 35.000 hours, the longest lifetime ever announced.

LCD: still alive for long years

"Technologically speaking, we are able to produce 40"OLED screens but we must wait 2010 to produce giant OLED screens at reasonable prices" announced Samsung. This explains why LCD is still alive and will be the leading technology for a few years before being supplanted. Actually, Sony already launched an 11" OLED screen in Japan for almost Euros 1200. It will be difficult to see OLED screens at reasonable price in a close future but this technology will also emerge on computers' screens.
