28-300mm equivalent !
Possessing a zoom as polyvalent as this 18-200mm F3,5-6,3 DC is a guarantee of peace of mind : only one lens gathers all the useful focal length, from the 28mm to the 300mm when used on a D-SLR like the Nikon D40 or D40x for exemple. Unfortunately, the choice made by Nikon was to save money and to miniaturize entry level D-SLRs. As a result : the two bodies don't have any autofocus motorization. Since that, the list of compatible lenses is limited. Sigma is reacting and fits out, one year after the launch of the D40, its amateur zoom.
Sigma 18-200mm F3,5-6,3 DC for Nikon D40/D40x
This lens, highly polyvalent, is, as far as optics is concerned, rather performant because in spite of the extreme amplitude of the focal length, chromatic aberrations and distorsion remain raher limited. That is due to the use of SLD glass and Super Multi Layer treatment o fight against chromatic aberrations and the flare. The aspherical elements (2) help keeping the distorsion under control even if a compromise concerning the image quality is necessary to obtain such an amplitude. The result is a very compact zoom for its category : it is only 75,5mm long for 395 grammes. It is the ideal friend of a D40 or a D40x to travel light, particularly now that the lens has been motorized.
