Beats Pill+ Review : a very convincing Bluetooth pill
Let’s take a closer look at this Beats Pill+ Bluetooth speaker, powered by Apple Lightning.
Ride the Lightning
And its calalogue, between Pill and Pill XL, Beats offers this Pill+, a Bluetooth speaker designed to go wherever you go and fill the room with a rich clear sound field that has as much power as it does definition. A pretty elegant speaker, that can be connected to every Bluetooth device, even if this Pill+ (as the complete Beats catalogue) is now very “Apple friendly”. An Apple touch that can be found on the speaker itself, as it gets an included Lightning Cable and a Lightning port of course for a “quick charge in three hours” according to Apple.
First, you’ll be pretty amazed by the packaging of this Beats Pill+, very classy for sure… but very heavy too ! Compared to its slightly compact size, the speaker weights approximatively 0,75 kgs, which let us hope for a very strong conception and audio quality. Once the speaker out of the box, we find this very carasteristic pill shape, and quality materials, including a non-slip grip area very “soft touch, which also helps to keep a perfect stability.
With a sleek interface, the Beats Pill+ is very intuitive to use. Pairing the Beats Pill+ to an iPhone, a MacBook or any other Bluetooth-enabled device only takes a few seconds, and you can immediately start listening to your favorite tracks, using the soft touch interface on top. A very simple interface, with a “On/Off” button, volume controls, and a “b” backlit button, which will be used to pair, to pass the current track, and take phone calls. Only regret : no NFC here.
The Beats Pill+ is a stereo active 2-way crossover system that creates an optimized sound field for dynamic range and clarity across “all genres of music” according to Apple, even if some styles (rock, metal, electro…) are more positives than other more “subtle” music styles. Tweeter and woofer separation uses the same acoustic mechanics found in professional recording studios around the world.
No bad surprise concerning the general use of this Beats Pill+, everything is very simple and intuitive. Concerning battery life, a LED system next to the power button helps to prevent the “breakdown”, by alerting the user. A brief pression on the On/Off button reveals the remaining battery. Nice ! The Beats Pill+ has a 12-hour battery life to stay charged on the go. Of course, you can keep the music going by charging your iPhone or external music device with extra juice from the Beats Pill+, thanks to the USB port on the back.
What we like :
+ Beautiful and compact design
+ Very simple and intuitive interface
+ Very strong audio
+ 12-hours rechargeable battery
+ Built-in microphone
What we don’t :
– Very heavy sound, not adapted for all musical styles
– No NFC
– Maybe a bit too “Apple Friendly”
One thing’s for sure, this Beats Pill+ is very expensive (229 dollars), but it’s also clear that only a few speakers can compare to this Pill+, which offers a good battery-life, a perfect design and intuitive interface, and of course a very powerful (even if a bit too heavy sometimes) sound. We’re not really sure about the “apple friendly lighting charge cable” stuff, but this Pill+ is a pretty good Bluetooth speaker for sure, and a very classy one too, if you choose the white version.
