As per Canon tradition, it is a APS sized CMOS sensor which will be at the heart of the Canon EOS 40D. Its 10 megapixel resolution should offer a fairly good compromise between resolution and sensitivity. As often, Canon has adapted on the prosumer market some innovations appeared on the professional market just like here with the 14 bits JPEG system taken from the EOS 1D Mark III line. This will allow the 40D users to benefit from a higher dynamic range and to be able to give priority to the highest tones to avoid missing information on clearest areas of their pictures like often found on white clouds or braid dress. The 40D sensitivity will range until ISO 1600 and can be boost until ISO 3200 on H mode to allow interior pictures without flash.

The AF system of the Canon EOS 40D is also quite new. It offers the high performance of 9 cross type sensors for a faster and more precise focus. The 9 x type sensors are sensitive until as fast as f/2,8. They are helped by 8 regular sensors. Just like on the EOS 1D MarkIII, a button called "AF-ON" allows the user to switch for a shot from manual focus to autofocus.

In addition to a "on paper high performance" AF system, the sport and action photographers will enjoy the 6,5 fps burst rate of the EOS 40D, which is quite a wide improvement, compared to last generation. Let's thank the DIGIC III processor for that. I twill also allow the buffer to absorb no less than 75 JPEG files in a row. These are figures you would expect from a professional action photography D-SLR 2 years ago !

The eyepiece of the Canon 40D has been improved in comparison with the one adopted previously by Canon on the 30D : it is wider and much clearer although it displays the image of an APS-C sized sensor which always appear shrinker than a full frame sensor image. The LCD screen also widens to reach a generous 3" size. The "Live View" system which displays the focused imaged not only in the eyepiece but also on the LCD screen is now also mounted on the 40D but you loose the AF system then.

An optional battery grip makes it easier to shoot in portrait orientation with the 40D and thank to the Canon K246 transmitter, the Canon EOS 40D is now ready to be wirelessly controlled thank to a simple Wi-Fi system.
